15th European Wildlife Disease Conference

9—13 September 2024, Stralsund, Germany

Workshop

General  Information

Registration for workshops needs to be done via Oxford Abstract. If you are not yet registered with Oxford Abstract, you will be asked to do so. Workshops can be selected when registering for the general EWDA 2024 Conference.

There will be a total of four workshops held on Monday, 9 September 2024. Apart from the workshop on aquatic mammal health, which will be held in Stralsund, all workshops will take place at the headquarters of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut. The Institute is located on the Isle of Riems, a small island situated halfway between Greifswald and Stralsund in the Baltic Sea. A shuttle from Stralsund to the Isle of Riems and back will be provided that day. More detailed information will follow.

For questions regarding workshops, please e-mail the organizing team EWDA2024@~@fli.de.

1. Aquatic Mammal Health

In this workshop, we will address topics of aquatic mammal health in theory and practice. We are focusing on species resident to the German Baltic Sea coast. Talks include specific diseases, anthropogenic impacts on the health of marine mammals, and methods for the health assessment of marine mammals.

In the afternoon, participants attend a hands-on live dissection of a marine mammal (harbour porpoise, grey seal or harbour seal – depending on availability). Here, we will also discuss anatomic specifics and sampling procedures.

This workshop will be given by experts in aquatic mammal health from the Veterinary University Hannover and the Deutsches Meeresmuseum.

Learn about all the postgraduate opportunities that exist within wildlife health and disease.

2) Science communication beyond journal articles:

Get ideas on how to reach stakeholders and the general public who don’t necessarily read scientific literature with your message. This session will be led by Ruth Cromie and Katherina Seilern-Moy, who will share their experiences through an interactive exercise.

Surveillance in wildlife is challenging and not always straight forward. Nevertheless, it offers an insight into different aspects of the One-Health picture. The workshop provides theoretical background as well as practical examples of surveillance in wildlife. For the practical part, a field site will be visited and samples (non-invasive) collected. Wildlife cameras will be used and pictures analysed. You will see the diversity of wild animals even on the small Isle of Riems!

It will be given by experts on epidemiology and transboundary animal diseases from the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute.
